Watson Lake, Yukon Territory! June 16 & 17, 2010

From Liard we drove to Yukon Territory! We wanted to stop and get the Yukon sign, but a tour bus pulled in just before us and off-loaded 45 tourists who also wanted the picture. We would return!

We arrived in Watson Lake early in the afternoon. After filling the rv we made the requisite stop at the visitor center. From there it was on to our campground 4 miles out of town. When possible, we have been staying at provincial parks. They don't have hook-ups, but they are nestled in the woods which we prefer to parking lots with hook-ups! We found that the parks in Yukon Territory also provide firewood with your night's stay. (Rumor has it that British Columbia used to do the same until this year!)
After setting up camp we walked to the lake.
From there we found a trail around the edge of the campground. Bob, as always, had the bear spray just in case. We always see evidence on or near the trail, but so far we have only seen bears from the safety of the rv.
We stayed 2 nights in Watson Lake Yukon Government Campground. We went to the library to check e-mail and read the news, then it was off to sightsee and geocache. One of the caches was located near the Yukon sign we missed the previous day. I knew we would return! We also rode to the airport. We noticed most signs were in French and English. The historic airport terminal has many pictures posted about the history of Watson Lake during WWII.Just next door is Yukon Air Services. The crumpled propeller was near the entrance as a memorial to those who flew in the area during WWII.We returned to the town and took a walk through Signpost Forest, also started during WWII.Then it was back to the campground to rest for the next leg of our adventure: the drive to Whitehorse.
