Sightseeing--Monday, December 3

Bob and I took our time eating breakfast and getting ready. The museum did not open until 9:00. Right before we left, we realized we hadn't checked for geocaches! As we drove through town last night, we saw several places that looked like good places for caches. Bob looked up 6 caches and we were off.

First stop was the Route 66 Museum in Elk City. In the same block are the Elk City Historical Museum and the Farm Museum.
There were a lot of interesting artifacts in each of the museums. As you enter the museum, they have the front end of a pink cadillac that you sit in and experience what it would have been like to ride on Route 66. Next is the back seat of a car at a drive-in with previews of movies.
The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck was inspired by Route 66.

There is a replica of an old Texaco gas station complete with Burma Shave signs. Those of you too young to know about Burma Shave, look it up!

Bob and I tried to warm up inside the train station. Even though it was supposed to get to 60 degrees, we don't think it got above 50 and with the wind it felt much cooler!

After warming up, we went outside and saw the collection of wind mills used to pump water on the plains of this area.

Our next stop was the farm museum. There was a back corner that Joyce's dad would have loved with every wrench, ratchet, plane. awl, wire stretcher and any other tool you can imagine using on a farm. Joyce even found a truck for Walter--a 1924 Ford.

Then it was back outside to see the Opera House and other town buildings.

After doing some shopping at the gift shop, we set off down Historic Route 66 to get our caches and to visit Clinton, Oklahoma.

We found five of the six caches we set out to find. The sixth one had been in a tree which was recently bulldozed. For our 150th find, we found our second Jeep travel bug.

Clinton was somewhat of a disappointment. The places we wanted to visit were closed on Mondays!

Tuesday we will continue on our way to Amarillo.
