Happy Birthday Jennifer!!

Tuesday was a travel day. Monday night we again toasted retirement while at Lake Elk City Park. It was too cold to sit outside so we walked out and watched the sunset over the lake.

Tuesday we started driving toward Amarillo. When we stopped for gas at a Flying J, Bob tried to put air in the back tires, but the air started coming out. There was a tire place across the way so we went over to get air. The manager said Flying J knew for 2 weeks that the air hose was not working, but did not put a sign on it to warn people. The folks at the tire place filled our tires with a smile and then we were on our way again.

We stopped in Amarillo for lunch. The only place to eat is The Big Texan. They offer a 72 ounce steak free if you can eat it in one hour. Bob ate one in 41 minutes, they were so impressed, Joyce got her meal free, too!

We forgot to take the camera inside. The inside was decorated like an oldtime saloon, complete with wooden floor and balcony. They had decorated for Christmas and it was very western oriented.

After lunch we started noticing a distinct odor in the air...Could it be all the stockyards in the Texas panhandle...hmmmmm. As we drove, the odor became stronger. We went through Hereford--the beef capital of the world (yes, it is named after the cow) and Bovina. Stockyards and graineries lined the route. And the smell was bad! We saw cowboys rounding up the stock and moving them to another pen so that a bulldozer could come in and scoop the poop.

The RR tracks followed our route through the western panhandle and into New Mexico. The ladies at the New Mexico welcome station told us that 100 trains pass in a 24 hour period.

We decided not to stop for the night in Texas and drove to Clovis, New Mexico. We stayed at Oasis State Park between Clovis and Portales. We are now on Mountain Time.

We are leaving Oasis and heading toward Roswell to visit the aliens.
