Wednesday, April 9, 2008--Cortez, Colorado

We knew Wednesday was going to be cold and rainy--we get our reports from weather.com. The plan for the day was to go into town and look around. Also, we wanted to check out the native arts and crafts store on the eastern edge of town.

We started the morning in the Cortez Cultural Museum. It was a nice museum with artifacts from the early years of Cortez as well as Native American culture. The back of the museum held an art show from local students--kindergarten through 12th. Joyce really enjoyed looking at the exhibit.

As we were browsing through brochures on the area, a couple we met from Maine came in to get out of the weather. We first saw them at Oliver Lee State Park in New Mexico, but didn't meet them until we were all staying at Navajo Lake State Park, NM. They are traveling with another couple from Maine--all on their way to Alaska! We noticed each other in the campgrounds because all our vehicles are carrying kayaks.

When we left the museum we checked out the store on the edge of town. The proprietor told us items made by Utes were much more reasonably priced than those made by Navajo or Apache. She didn't say why, but she was right. The difference on some items was over $1000.

As we left the store, the drizzling rain turned to snow. We went back to the rv to stay warm and decide what to do on Thursday. Our original plan was to leave and head to Goosenecks State Park Utah. We needed to rethink our plan.
