The Rest of the Week--April 1-4, 2008

April 3, 2008---Happy Birthday to Bob!!

We spent Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in Albuquerque at the Kirtland AFB Fam-Camp. The weather was supposed to be windy and cool. When I say windy, I mean constant wind of 15-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. We definitely did not want to drive the motorhome in that kind of wind.

Well, as it turned out, it was not as windy as the weatherman said. We could have left Wednesday as we originally planned. But, since we stayed, we did some mundane things like wax the front of the rv, install the protect-a-tow we ordered while in Florida, and received while at Bobby's house, laundry, restocking the fridge, and general, all-purpose cleaning. Friday morning, we filled the rv's propane tank at the campground, then topped off the rv's gas tank at the station on post ($3.11/gal.). We headed north out of Albuquerque on Interstate 25, but we did not stay on the interstate long; we exited to drive north on US 550. The sights started the same, brown colored mountains with sparsely growing trees and cacti.
We hadn't traveled far along 550 when the sights started to change. The mountains to the east were still brown, but to the west they were white with a few striations of red.The shapes of the scenery also changed. The mountains leveled off and were mesas and slanted cliffs along the road. These mountains were sandstone, not the basalt we had become used to seeing.

Then the sights changed again! The mountains changed to hills that were smooth with the occasional rock protruding out of the hills. We were climbing in elevation--up to 7000 feet!
Then, much to our surprise, we saw the Rocky Mountains in the distance! At first we thought we were seeing clouds, but as we drove further,we realized it was the snow-covered Rockies!

After about 200 miles of driving, we arrived at Navajo Lake State Park in northwestern New Mexico.

As we drove from the visitors' center to the campground, we had a great view of the lake.

We unhooked the car to drive around the campground to find the perfect spot. We found it without too much looking as the park was not as crowded as we expected.

This is the view from our front window...

from our dinette window...

and finally, the view to the rear of our site. We found a site that let us see all the vistas of the area!

We plan to stay here until Monday or Tuesday. We have heard the fishing is very good in this area. We'll let you know!

Happy Birthday Bob! Navaho lakes Neet. Gail and I camped there back in 1998. We had a tent. And from the picture it looks like almost the same spot. We were around the corner from the showers and up the cliff and a cross from the floating bait house. Good luck with the fishing. I wanted to but was afraid of not have a fishing license. Lynn is in Minniapolis. Cecil

Hey don't miss Aztec, Shiprock, and Mesa Verde, If you get time stop a Via Hermanos Mexican resturant in Farmington. Its near the airport on the south side of the main road through town. Its worth it. The have Sopapeas that are like biscuts you feel with honey. I once drove One Hundred miles out of my way to go back there. Cecil

Hey you guys keep at as long as you can. Like they say you never know one day you might not be able for one reason of another. Oh yeah don't forget Four Corners too. You can stand on four states at once. Nice little Indian market there where the make neat stuff, jewelry and much more. Lynn made it home safe. We are getting a little rain too. Cecil
