North Platte, Nebraska--Home of Buffalo Bill Cody

It was a short drive from our spot in Kansas to North Platte, Nebraska. We arrived late in the afternoon at the local reservoir campground.  We walked around the campground after we figured out where to purchase our permit to camp in Nebraska parks (Sinclair station at the highway turn-off). It was breezy and would be cool for the next few days.  There were a lot of tent sites at the campground, but we did find a site near the water that was large enough for us!
Saturday morning we set off to geocache and visit Buffalo Bill Cody's ranch. Our first stop was at the Veteran's Memorial. It was one of the nicest Veteran's parks we have seen in our travels. The carvings were made from bricks. During WWII, over 6 million troops passed through North Platte. North Platte is a huge railway center. The servicemen all ate at The Canteen.
From the memorial, we tried to get information at the visitor center, but it was closed on weekends! Next stop, Scout's Rest Ranch.  Well, much to our chagrin, it was also closed on weekends. Hmmmm, I guess tourists aren't welcome in Nebraska on the weekends.

We were able to walk around the grounds of the ranch.
We tried to look in the windows of the house, but we weren't able to see anything.
We tried to get some geocaches, but some of the areas were closed. We went back to the campground and walked around the reservoir to geocache. We ended up walking over 4 miles.

Since nothing we wanted to see was open, we left Sunday morning. Hopefully the visitor center on the interstate would be open so we could get more information on the area we would be traveling through.   Wishful thinking on our part......they were also closed!
