The Adventure Continues--Soldotna and Kenai--July 29, 2010

Once we left Homer, the sun started shining and we had a good travel day. We weren't going far, just to Soldotna and the Fred Meyer parking lot. That was our base to explore Kenai, Nikiski, and Capt. Cook Recreation Area.

The mouth of the Kenai River is famous for dip netting this time of year. Only Alaskans are allowed to fish this way. They wade into the river with huge nets and wait for fish to swim into the net.The Kenai Chamber of Commerce has a small museum dedicated to Russian influence in the area. Yes, there was a geocache in the bear's armpit!Kenai also has a Russian Orthodox Church. This one is on the National Historical Register. It is in the process of being restored. Wood rot on the side walls caused the building to sag. The siding has been removed, thus the brown side. From Kenai we drove to Nikiski which is mainly for oil companies. There is one section of road where you are not allowed to pull over or stop because oil storage tanks line both sides of the road.

At Captain Cook Recreation Area north of Nikiski you can see oil platforms in Cook Inlet. Bob and I counted at least 5, but it was cloudy and we may have missed some.
We returned to Soldotna. At the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce there is a walkway to the river. The walkway was built to prevent bank erosion by the fishermen.
We watched as this fisherman reeled in a salmon. He had to leave it in the water, remove the hook and throw it back as he had snagged it in the back. He was participating in combat fishing. It amazes me that they fish that close and that violently! You would think more people would be snagged, but then a local clinic advertises 'expert hook removal.'
We spent the night in Fred Meyer's parking lot and left early the next morning for Anchorage. For those of you who don't know Fred, he is like Wal-Mart! This Fred Meyer allows camping in its parking lot for 3 days. They ask that you don't cook outside, but no other stipulations. They also have a free dump station! The parking lot is a popular place. Fred's is also a good place to stock up on necessities.
