Sat., May 17,2008--Grand Teton NP

Happy 5th birthday, Benjamin!
Today was a day of exploration. First we downloaded some geocaches in the area and then we set off to see which areas were thawed! As we made our way to our first geocache, a herd of buffalo was crossing the road. We gave them plenty of room as they are very dangerous and aggressive.

Unfortunately, the people who passed us must not have known about the danger of buffalo! This bull stopped in the middle of the road and glared at them as if to say give me more space--or else!
We rode up a forest road to find our first cache. It was at Gros Ventre Slide area. In 1925 the 50 million cubic yards of rocks, trees, and soil slid slid down the mountain and blocked the river forming a lake.
Two years later, half of the dam broke and flooded the town of Kelly. A lake still remains above the slide area.
As we walked back to the car, we got our first picture of a chipmunk. We have seen many in our travels, but they scurry away as soon as they are spotted!

We headed for our next cache and saw a beautiful house with a view of the Tetons. The yard art was magnificent and on the same scale as the house--enormous! We think this must be Lewis and Clark.
This sculpture is of a bear trying to capture 2 eagles. There was also a sculpture of two elk fighting, but we couldn't get a clear shot of it.

After geocaching we went into the town of Jackson. It was the weekend of their annual antler auction! The square was surrounded by antlers of every size and animal! The proceeds of the auction benefit the local boy scouts.
We returned to the rv for lunch and then drove to Jackson Lodge and Colter Bay Village to see if they were ready to open. People were working at Jackson Lodge and Colter Bay, but the area still had a lot of snow. This is the Lake View Trail at Colter Bay.
The marina has started to thaw, but the water level is low.
The picnic area is still snowed-in! Jackson lake is in the background.

On our return trip to our site, we spotted this herd of elk near highway 89.
We enjoyed our day of exploring and will explore to the west on Sunday.

Man, I have never seen the water at Colter bay that low. Gail and I camped there three or four times. I sure would like to be there though. We did the trail out by the lake, down past the Welcome center. Sure looks cold. Watch out for the bears. Cecil

AWWWWWW!!! Thanks for the Happy Bday to my boy! I'll put him on the computer tomorrow to see it. He will think that is really neat. We'll see if it tops all the animal pictures you have on here this post.

He had his first party (well, since the one year old one). We held it at the pool (indoor) and about 16 kids were there. He was beaming! It was a great day! We can't believe our little guy is 5!

Preschool is over---thank goodness! I am so glad I never have to step foot in that place again!

Looks like the sites just keep coming. I'd say they keep getting better, but they are so versatile and unique that how can they compare to one another? You two have made me want to travel out west and northwest someday too!

Love,
Amy
