Home and Back to El Paso--February 19 through March 3

Bob and I enjoyed our short trip home. While at home we were able to visit family and friends.

We took two days to go to Jacksonville to visit Beverly and Walter (my sister and brother). While there, Walter helped me design and cut the 'Jokers and Pegs' game. I am working to finish the game pieces. When I tried to stain the pieces, the stain was blotchy. Before I left home, I resanded the pieces and will try re-staining soon.

Jennifer talked us into walking with Andy and her one evening. We also ate dinner with them the Wednesday before we returned. It was good to see the newlyweds. Both have new jobs in the new year!

Lynn told us the rv show was in town the Saturday we were home. We went with Hoss, Lynn, Gail and Cecil. As always, we decided we like our rv best because it has that special no payment feature!

Karen and Hank, though retired, are still working hard. Karen is tutoring reading and writing for FCAT. Hank was in North Carolina meeting his new grandson--taking him to and from pre-school for a week to help his new family.

Jim continues remodeling his house and keeping an eye on everything in the neighborhood.

Our last day home, we stopped by the Administrative Center for Bob to visit a few people. He was delighted to learn his former co-workers were meeting. We visited with his work buddies until their meeting time.

It was too close to the end of the school day for me to visit George Marks and time was limited, so we went on to our final doctors' appointments.

Once we completed our taxes, doctor and dentist appointments, it was time to get back on the road. We left home on Friday, February 29 to begin the long drive back to El Paso.

The first night we drove to Moss Point, Mississippi just east of Biloxi. We had a slow start ( didn't leave home until 10: 30 a.m.) and an uneventful drive.

Our second night was spent in Fredericksburg, Texas. I thought driving through Houston would be quicker than going around with all the stop and go traffic so Bob let me drive from the Texas welcome area to San Antonio since he doesn't like big cities. Houston is HUGE, and the traffic was heavy through town, but eased considerably after the downtown area. We slowed again after San Antonio because of oversized-load trucks. The trucks were transporting pieces of the towers for wind the generators we've seen dotting the western horizons. The bottom sections looked large enough to drive through!

We stayed in downtown Fredericksburg and ate at the German restaurant recommended by the motel clerk. The meal was scrumptious! Bob said it was the best schnitzel he'd had since we lived in Germany! (Emmy's pan fried potatoes and red cabbage slaw are still the best Bob's eaten.)

Sunday we left the land of humidity, trees, and green grass to reenter the arid land of west Texas. The speed limit on I-10 west of Fredericksburg is 80mph. It declines to 70 when you get to the El Paso County line. We ate lunch at a small cafe in Fort Stockton. We also stopped to see the roadrunner welcoming everyone to Fort Stockton. It is not quite as large as the one near Las Cruces, NM, but still large!

We arrived in El Paso in time to cookout with Bobby, Cathy, and the kids. It was nice to see them and the 'big car' again. Bobby and Cathy have done a good job landscaping their back yard. Christopher and DeAnna love running and playing in their yard.

DeAnna swings on the swing and tries to scare me with spiders and things.

Christopher likes to play Superman-Ninja Turtle.

We will be in El Paso until Christopher's third birthday, March 9th. Then we will continue on our way as we wander the roads of the west on our journey to Alaska.
