We left Valdez on a cold, cloudy day--just like all the others, nothing new there. We took our time sightseeing and geocaching as we headed to Anchorage.
On sight that caught our eye was Matanuska Glacier. We are impressed with the huge ice flows coming down the mountains. We found a few of the caches, but some were off the road quite a ways and since we were in the rv, they were unreachable. We arrived in Anchorage later than we like to stop, but since we were headed to Ft. Richardson, it didn't matter. We checked in with the host and spent the first night in overflow. The next day we were moved to a full hook-up site (yes, it even had sewer!). First on our agenda was to find the post office for an address for Bob's dad to use to send us the part for our broken step. Then it was to the commissary for reasonably priced food!
Since we arrived in Alaska, the weather has been cool, cloudy and rainy. Anchorage was no exception to the norm!
After doing chores, we decided to head downtown for some sightseeing--we didn't take the cameras, we just wanted to look around. We found some interesting stores: one with antique scrimshaw, another with fur pelts, several cheap souvenir stores and the requisite high-priced souvenir stores. We enjoyed our visit downtown as we found a place to return and park with the bikes.
Anchorage has many bike trails/cross-country ski trails. The most used trail is Tony Knowles Coastal Trail which starts downtown and goes 11 miles to Kincaid Park. We decided to ride a portion of the trail, even though the weather was cloudy and cool--no rain.We rode from Elderberry Park to Point Woronzof. On a clear day you are supposed to be able to see beluga whales and the mountains on the other side of Turnagain Arm--but not that day! We were able to see downtown Anchorage.Another day we decided to go for a hike. Bob chose McHugh Creek trailhead to access Turnagain Arm Trail. The trail was pretty good except for the loose rocks about 500 feet above the highway! That was a little scary as the trail went down to nothing and your footing was perilous! The views were great!A little further down the trail, Bob made a sudden stop and shushed me.....he spotted something moving near the trail......BEAR!!!! No, just a huge porcupine! He turned around to watch us as we continued on our way.
Then, about a hundred yards on down the trail, Bob stopped suddenly and shushed me again....something bigger was moving through the woods......BEAR!!! No, but just as dangerous, a moose eating leaves on a tree.We had a good time hiking even though the weather wasn't great. We ate our picnic lunch as we looked out over Turnagain Arm.Then Tuesday, July 6 arrived as did the part for our step! Bob took the day to fix the step. Since he had it apart, he cleaned and greased it well. Hooray! No more step stools, the step is fixed!
