June 9 & 10, 2008--The Western Cascades

We left Indian Ford Campground early and headed toward Springfield. The weather turned rainy as we drove. We were enjoying the views and saw a sign for a waterfall. Even though it was raining, we stopped. What a gorgeous area!
The trees were huge and kept the walkway to the falls protected from most of the rain. Green moss covered everything, even the stone pillars holding the fence rails!
As soon as we started on the walkway to Sahalie Falls, we could hear the rushing water!
The water rushing over the falls was a beautiful ice blue! The turbulence was amazing. With record snowfall, the melt was creating this scene of rushing blue water! We later saw pictures of a much calmer falls and river.
We continued on the path by the river toward Koosah Falls which is about a half mile downstream. We couldn't make it all the way to Koosah Falls because of snow blocking the trail! We turned back toward Sahalie Falls and decided to stay in the area overnight if we could find a campground. We talked to a forest service worker who was in the parking area and he told us to try Trailbridge Reservoir. He knew the campground was open and that our rig would fit! Several of the other campgrounds were still snowcovered! We drove to Trailbridge Campground and found one other camper there! We chose a site by the reservoir. After setting up camp, we drove back to the Koosah Falls parking area to see if we could get a glimpse of the falls. There was no snow on the trail down to the falls! It was beautiful! Both Sahalie Falls and Koosah Falls cascade over a bed of lava rock.
I hope you can see the ice blue color in the picture below. It really is amazing to see this clear blue water cascading over the falls and rushing down the river!
Due to the increased snow melt, there were four small falls near the bottom of Koosah Falls on the opposite bank of the river.
This trillium was growing beside the trail. I kept looking for the rare chocolate lily, but didn't see one.We drove to the towns of McKenzie Bridge and Rainbow, Oregon. In Rainbow we found the Holiday Resort and decided it would be a good place to eat dinner on our 35th anniversary. The food was great and the people were friendly.

We would have stayed in the area longer, but the rain continued! Tuesday morning we packed up and completed our drive to Springfield, Oregon home of AM Solar.
